Interview & Giveaway with Scarlett Sanderson

1)      Tell us a bit about yourself. How does your day go? What keeps you writing?

Hi everyone. Thanks so much to Josee Renard for inviting me over. I’m really excited to be here during release week of my new book.

I’d like to say I lead some extremely exciting life but in reality I’m a librarian by day and an erotica author by night. It’s not really a secret identity any more. Most people know what I write! I’ve been writing professionally for eight years. Actually, I didn’t realise it had been that long! I started off writing for a small romance e-publisher but my work began to get more and more erotic. I had this dark side waiting to be revealed *laughs* Last year I started writing for Ellora’s Cave and my muse soared.

My writing day varies so much from week to week. I have a full time day job so writing mainly happens at weekends. I’ll get up, pump myself full of English tea (a terrible vice of mine!) and start thinking about the story. I’ll browse the net – twitter, good reads, a few messages boards I’m a member of, maybe write a blog post. Then I’ll open up a word document and start typing. Once I sit down to write I’m quite disciplined.

What keeps me writing? The characters. The plot. If I didn’t write I wouldn’t have an outlet for the ideas and I’m not sure that’s good for my sanity.

2)      What brought you to writing erotica? What do you love about it?

I’ve always loved erotica. I spent four years as a romance reviewer and my sub genre of choice was always erotica. Erotica used to get a bad reputation. In some circles, it still does. It’s not just sex. Erotica is sensual. It tantalises, teases, calls to your wildest fantasies and deepest emotions.

I’ve always been a little kinky so I decided to utilise that in my writing. Some romance stories were great but I wanted to know what happened behind closed doors. Have you ever read a book where the male is so Alpha? So set-your-teeth-on-edge sexy and commanding that your body starts to tingle? Then you get the sex scene and it happens behind closed doors? Very frustrating. My personal longing fuelled the characters in my head and I began to write erotica.

3)      What are you working on now?

This week sees the release of my newest book, Darkness Comes. A futuristic erotica from the Aeon line at Ellora’s Cave. This book really played with my emotions. It’s a lot darker than my usual contemporary stories, but it fits perfectly in the world I’ve created for Shadows (a futuristic crime erotica novel due for release later this year with EC).

I’m currently working on so many things but I’m most excited by a 3 book series for the Taboo line at Ellora’s Cave. I can’t say any more at the moment but each individual book involves ex-military men.

4)      What is your-or your character’s-favourite erotic book? Sexy movie? Sex toy?

My favourite erotic book changes all the time! My latest favourite is Hostile Takeover by Joey W. Hill. It’s such an emotional rollercoaster ride. The psychological aspects of the main characters relationship made me cry. Sexy movie – clichéd but The Secretary, and anything with Michael Fassbender *smiles* I don’t really have a favourite sex toy. I prefer the eroticism of everyday items. A leather belt, a wooden spoon, a hairbrush…that’s all I’m going to say!

5)      What’s the one thing you’ve always wanted to do? The top thing on your personal bucket list?

Hmmm, I have so many things I want to do. Watching the sun go down across the ocean on a Caribbean island. Having a Lara Croft type adventure exploring some ancient ruins. Walk through Central Park hand in hand with Mister Scarlett soaking up the atmosphere and have a picnic. Learn to dance the Argentinean tango then dance it on a sultry night in an exotic country.

6)      What’s your personal romantic (or erotic) fantasy?

I have to choose just one? *laughs* I’m a terrible romantic right down to the core. I have all these wild fantasies of being swept off my feet, having all the fancy trappings that come with that, of belonging to someone. As I’ve grown older I understand that while all the fancy sweeping might be nice occasionally, other things matter more. It’s important to have someone who understands you, someone who can share your greatest joys and support you during you during the dark times.  Someone you can’t wait to go home to and wake up with. Someone you can grow old with. Sappy, but true.

Erotic fantasy? Well, I do have a wicked imagination. But I’ll keep those thoughts to myself.

Blurb:

Mia is a respected psychologist with the Company—an interplanetary conglomerate—and a master at using virtual technology to penetrate the criminal mind. No one knows about her sex-slave past, or about the dark desires she tries to ignore. When she’s given Dylan Benjamin’s case and told to break him down, something about the man, something primal, reaches deep inside her and strokes the taboo lust she’s worked so hard to hide.
Dylan just wanted revenge against the Company. He never expected to get caught stealing, or to be pitted against Mia in a virtual world. But he recognizes the darkness lurking in her and he’ll do anything to draw it out, to prove they’re kindred spirits. Only he can give Mia what she needs—not soft and gentle but hard and fast. No roses or pretty words—just chains and rough, raw pleasure.
Reader Advisory: This story takes place in a dark and gritty world where violence is a fact of life. It contains material that may be disturbing or triggering for some readers.

The Giveaway: Scarlett will be giving away a copy of Darkness Comes.  Just comment below with a question or comment for her to be entered into the giveaway.  The winner will be selected Monday Morning!
