An Interview with Anna Leigh Keaton

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How does your day go? What keeps you writing?

Hi, my name’s Anna Leigh Keaton, and I write erotic romance. *grin* I can’t seem to find a 12-step program for my addiction, but I keep trying!

I’m in my thirties—doesn’t matter how far into them—and I’ve been writing since I was a pre-teen. I’ve been published now for about 6 years and have over 40 publications to my name(s). I originally started writing under Leanne Karella, but write exclusively as Anna Leigh Keaton now.

I’m married, have a teenage daughter, and live in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. I grew up the youngest of 9 kids in Alaska.

What keeps me writing? Pretty easy to answer. Number one, and I hope that it’s always number one, is that I need to write—must write—or I go a little insane. Yeah, I’m a writer, so I think we’re all insane, but I get very depressed—another ‘artist’ affliction I think—if I don’t let the little voices in my head have free rein.

And number two is that I know I reach my readers. Every email I get that says a story of mine touched someone’s heart keeps me going when I want to give up. I put my heart and soul into everything I write, and knowing that my readers can feel it is the best feeling in the world.

I have no set schedule as to how my day’s going to go. Usually, before I get out of bed in the morning, I try to organize my day in my head. But I have a teenager and a husband. My day rarely goes as planned. I have a day job I work at from home, and then there’s the writing. I do both in the time between making sure my family is fed, where they need to be on time, and kept fairly healthy. *grin*

What brought you to writing erotica? What do you love about it?

Honestly, it was the money. I started out writing very category/mainstream romance. The books I sold didn’t net me any income. I had a couple writer friends who ventured into erotic romance and urged me to give it a try. I swore up and down that I could not, under any circumstances, ever write that stuff. *blush* Turns out I’m pretty good at it. And being that I fell in love with doing it is even better. I consider my erotic romance as hot, hot, hot mainstream romance. I use dirty words, the sex/sensual scenes are smoking hot, but my happily-ever-after story is always there, and always deeply emotional. I think that’s how I’ve grown my readership. I think I offer something a little different than the average erotica author. Smut and plot together equals awesome reading. *wink*

Now, I must say I have written some short erotica pieces that do not have HEA endings. Those are just darned fun to write.

What are you working on now?

Right now I’ve got a few projects going on. My co-author, Madison Layle, and I just started book 3 in our Puma Nights series (published at Carina Press). We’ll also be starting book 5 in our Once Upon a Time series soon, which is published at Cobblestone Press. I have Just Breathe (not co-authored) which is a single title novel in edits at Cobblestone Press right now—scheduled for a September release. Falke’s Captive, book 2 in the Puma Nights series is slated for an October release. Midnight Mine, book 4 in the Once Upon a Time series is released June 3rd at Cobblestone Press. And I’ve been diligently working to re-write, re-edit, and re-issue my out-of-print backlist for those readers who didn’t know me back then. Courage to Believe and Beauty Within are now available on Amazon, Barnes & Nobel, and All Romance E-books.

What is your—or your character’s—favorite erotic book? Sexy movie?? Sex toy?

Hmm… Okay, we’re getting personal now.

I must say, my favorite erotic book, not written by myself, is Owning Rachel by Madison Layle. That is the book that changed my life and sucked me into the world of erotic romance. It’s dirty, it’s a little dark, it’s hot and a little scary and has one hell of a happily ever after. The perfect erotic romance.

Sexy Movie? You mean besides hard-core porn? Just kidding…or am I? *grin* I actually really love romantic comedies, thrillers, and good horror—which is difficult to find. One of my favorite movies of all time is Basic Instinct. Sexy and thriller—what could be better?

 As for sex toy?

The only thing I’ll say to that is that every adult woman needs to have a good one within reach. *grin*

What’s the one thing you’ve always wanted to do? The top thing on your personal bucket list?

I really believe in doing it now, because you never know when it’ll be too late. I would like to, someday, live for a few months in the Emerald Isles. That’s the only thing really out of my reach right now. I’ve traveled the USA, and will be doing so again this summer with my daughter. I love nature, small towns, and museums. We camp, we stay in hotels, we try new foods. I try to make my life the fullest it can be. It’s too short to write bucket lists.

What’s your personal romantic (or erotic) fantasy?

Every one I write is my fantasy in that moment.

I’d like to invite anyone to drop me an email at if you’d like me to add you to my newsletter list (All emails are 100% private and never shared!)

Anna, this is a terrific blog. And thanks. I didn’t realize you fell in love with erotica by reading Owning Rachel – I loved that book as well. Great to have you with us.
